Family Literacy Nights are an excellent way to engage parents and provide ideas for them to support their child's learning.
Purposes of family literacy events:
To provide parents & caregivers ways to support their child's reading & writing growth
To help parents & caregivers partner with teachers to strengthen their child's learning
To build positive relationships between schools and families.
Ideas for author presentations during family literacy events:
Interactive reading including strategies to build children's reading and/or writing growth.
Presentation: Step up Reading Time to build your child's reading & writing growth (up to grade 4)
Author will share a variety ways to engage children while reading to strengthen literacy skills (e.g., vocabulary, background knowledge, comprehension, visualization, writing).
Presentation will include strategies for reading with kids who "won't sit still," a frequent concern of parents.
Interactive reading session followed by author question/answer time (grades pre-school - 4)
Interactive reading followed by an author-led writing activity (grades K-5 with parents supporting younger students)

It was a delightful evening reading Sled Ride and sharing the importance of reading together as a family.
Family Literacy Event @ Wright Elementary School

"Our Winter Wonderland family night with Carol June Franks was so much fun for our K-5 students! She did an interactive reading of Sled Ride Down Unrue Street, which was perfect for our winter theme. Kids were engaged the entire time, and she did a great job of emphasizing to families the importance of reading at home with tips for how to maximize the educational impact of reading while keeping it fun. Families enjoyed talking with her afterwards, and students were very excited to meet a real author. It was a memorable night for all!"
